The field practicum is a cornerstone of the Part-Time Online Master of Social Work (MSW) program option at the University of Pittsburgh. It serves as a bridge between academic learning and hands-on experience, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings.
Through the practicum, students develop essential skills while making a meaningful impact in their communities. Pitt offers comprehensive guidance and support at every stage of this rigorous experience. Recognized as the signature pedagogy of social work study, practicum education is fully integrated into the curriculum, playing a vital role in shaping students’ professional identities and preparing them to meet real social work challenges.
Practicum Structure: Hours and Experiences
The MSW practicum at Pitt requires a total of 1,080 field education hours, completed across two placements. Students begin with a 360-hour generalist practicum that builds foundational competencies in social work practice. In the advanced portion of the program, typically during the final year, students complete a 720-hour specialization practicum focused on more complex, direct practice with individuals, families, and groups. Together, these field placements account for 18 of the 60 required credit hours for the MSW degree.
The generalist practicum provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the social work profession, emphasizing core values, ethical principles and foundational theories of practice. Students gain experience working with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities while developing skills in engagement, assessment, intervention and evaluation.
In the Direct Practice specialization practicum, students refine their ability to deliver evidence-informed interventions rooted in social work ethics and values. They deepen their practice skills in working with individuals, families and small groups, while honing their abilities in critical thinking, self-reflection and cultural humility. Emphasis is also placed on advocacy for human rights and social, economic and environmental justice at both local and global levels.
During semesters that include a practicum placement, students typically spend an average of 12 to 16 hours per week at their field site. This consistent weekly engagement allows students to integrate classroom learning with hands-on practice, gradually building confidence and competence in professional social work roles.

Placement Process: How It Works
The Pitt MSW practicum placement process is designed to align students with meaningful field experiences that reflect their professional goals and meet the competencies established by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Pitt follows a structured, collaborative four-step approach:
- Complete the practicum request form: Students begin by submitting a detailed practicum request form, which gathers information about their professional interests, work history, prior field experience, transportation access, schedule availability and other relevant factors. This information helps practicum advisors identify placements that align with students’ goals and meet program requirements.
- Collaborate with a practicum advisor: Students are paired with a practicum advisor who works closely with them to explore local agency sites that meet CSWE standards and align with their area of interest or intended career path. This partnership ensures that placements are both educationally appropriate and personally meaningful.
- Placement coordination: Practicum advisors coordinate directly with agency partners to confirm placements, taking into account both student preferences and agency needs. All placements are finalized through formal agreements between the university and the agency, ensuring compliance with accreditation and program expectations.
- Start the practicum: Generalist (foundation-level) field placements typically begin in the second semester of the first year, while specialization (advanced-level) placements generally start in the final year of study. This timing allows students to apply newly acquired classroom knowledge in real-world settings progressively throughout the program.
Field placements are tailored to each student’s local area and customized to reflect their educational path and personal circumstances. While flexibility is essential—especially due to geographic and agency availability—Pitt maintains partnerships with over 500 approved field sites, offering students a wide range of opportunities.
To streamline the process, the School of Social Work uses Sonia, an online platform that enables students and advisors to view placement options, manage documentation and track practicum progress from the initial planning stages through completion.
Where Students Are Placed
Pitt MSW students complete practicum placements in diverse settings, including schools, hospitals, mental health agencies, senior living communities, detention centers and rehabilitation facilities. Generalist placements provide broad exposure to diverse client populations and various practice environments. For students pursuing certificate programs—such as Children, Youth and Families; Integrated Healthcare; Mental Health; or Gerontology—placements are tailored to align with their area of specialization. This targeted approach ensures each experience supports the student’s academic goals and career trajectory.
A Strong Support System
Students are supported throughout the practicum experience by a dedicated team of practicum advisors, faculty and agency-based field instructors. Practicum advisors provide individualized guidance and mentorship, helping students navigate each phase of the placement process. Faculty and field instructors provide oversight to ensure students meet learning objectives, develop essential professional competencies and receive regular evaluation and feedback.
The practicum is more than a requirement—it’s a vital opportunity to refine core social work skills, build professional networks and prepare for licensure and long-term career success. It also serves as a platform for engaging with issues of equity, anti-oppressive practice, and social justice, key pillars of Pitt’s mission to tackle complex social problems through innovative, community-centered solutions.
