Covering costs

At Pitt, we’re passionate about helping social workers succeed, and we’re committed to helping you determine your options for covering the cost of tuition. By understanding your degree cost, assessing your budget, and taking advantage of the available federal and institutional resources, you’ll minimize your financial burden and have more time to focus on earning your degree.

Federal Financial Aid

What is federal financial aid?

The federal government offers need-based financial aid through grants, work-study and loans to help students pay for college. You can use federal aid to cover expenses such as tuition, housing, food, books, transportation and technology.

How do I apply?

You can apply for financial aid by creating a StudentAid.gov account and completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Completing the form is straightforward, and most people can do so in under an hour.

What do I need to apply?

You’ll be required to provide important personal information such as your social security number, tax returns, proof of citizenship and bank balances. Gather these items in advance so that you can easily provide everything that’s needed.

What is Pitt’s FAFSA code?

The University of Pittsburgh’s Federal School Code is 008815. You’ll need to enter this code on the FAFSA form to let Pitt access your FAFSA information. This will allow us to calculate your eligibility for federal student aid.

What is the deadline?

The FAFSA deadline for the 2024–2025 academic year is June 30, 2025. Plan to complete the application well before this date to ensure you don’t miss out on the opportunity to be considered.
